Celebrex
is a COX-2 selective non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by stopping the body's production of prostaglandin that causes pain and inflammation.
Hence, Celebrex is a highly effective painkiller in conditions where the underlying cause is an inflammation and you need regular and long term pain relief — it has the advantage as against other painkillers that it causes fewer gastric problems. Celebrex reduces the swelling, tenderness and stiffness where joints are affected. Thus, it is commonly prescribed in cases of rheumatoid arthritis where the joints swell, osteoarthritis where the lining of the joints is damaged, and ankylosing spondylitis which is arthritis of the spine.
Celebrex has also been found effective to relieve the more painful symptoms associated with menstruation, and to reduce the number and size of polyps (abnormal growths) in the large intestine and rectum which, if not treated, can develop into cancer of the large intestine.

The most common side effects fall into two broad classes of symptoms. All the NSAIDs can cause gastric upsets. The Food and Drug Administration has required a revision of the labelling to include a boxed warning and a Medication Guide to highlight the potential for an increased risk either of a stroke or heart attack or of developing serious ulcers in the stomach or intestine. But, the FDA concluded that the potential benefits from taking Celebrex generally outweigh the possible risks. having weighed the evidence, the FDA decided that Celebrex should remain available for use. Although, knoowing the risks, you should prefer to take lower doses.
Before taking Celebrex
As with any prescription-based medication, you should discuss the benefits and risks of taking Celebrex with your regular physician. In particular, you should take additional care if you suffer from asthma or if your nose has been stuffed up or runny, or the lining of your nose has been swollen. There will also be issues to resolve if you have experienced any swelling of your arms and legs, hand and feet. For different reasons, you should be careful if you have kidney or liver disease. Finally, you should tell your physician if you are, or plan to become, pregnant. It may also not be advisable to take Celebrex if you are breast-feeding.
